Complete Singles & Album Tracks Plus Eureka Stockade Unreleased Album (2CD)
Garry Spry; âIn May 1967, after returning from six months in the U.K with the Twilights, who I was managing, I was approached by keyboardist extraordinaire Tweed Harris who had just left âThe Clefsâ. Tweed wanted me to start a new band for him. Having seen the rise of two super groups in the UK âCreamâ and âTrafficâ, I set about doing the same in Australia. We recruited Rod Stone, lead guitarist with The âLibrettosâ and âThe Playboysâ, who was between jobs. We quickly recruited drummer Geoff Bridgford, from âSteve and the Boardâ and then Jamie Byrne, the bassist with âRunning Jumping Standing Stillâ. I heard that Peter Williams had just left âMax Merritt & His Meteorsâ and I quickly snaffled him as the lead singerâ, and so was born 'The Grooveâ - Australiaâs first Supergroup.
âThe Grooveâ quickly established themselves as one of the top Australian groups during their 3 year career on the back of six hit singles, all of which are featured on this collection. They won the prestigious Hoadleyâs Battle of the Sounds in 1968 by beating the âMasters Apprenticeâ and âDoug Parkinson In Focusâ. To cap off a successful year they were voted the third best Australian band in the national Go-Set readers poll behind âThe Twilightsâ and âMasters Apprenticeâsâ. Mid 1969 saw the group in the UK, and while the future looked promising wider success eventually alluded them. They were paid the ultimate compliment by Chas Chandler who was looking for a new act to replace Jimi Hendrik who he managed before his then recent death â You guys are F#*>kin Bloody Brilliant, what are you doinâ for managementâ but his offer was too late, they were in the final stages of breaking up.
