Lost At Sea
Punk veteran. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee. Americana & Rock songwriter. Modern-day guitar hero. For more than 25 years, Chris Shiflett has blurred the lines between genre and generation, balancing his full-band projects with a thriving solo career. āLost at Seaā was produced by Jaren Johnston of The Cadillac Three. āRight away in the studio I could tell it was a bit of a left turn for me musically but thatās also what I like about it. A big part of my inspiration to work with Jaren on this record was because I knew heād push me out of my comfort zone into new territory.ā said Shiflett.
āDamage Control'' is by far the oldest song of mine on the new record. All the other tunes were written in the months leading up to recording, but when Jaren and I were sorting out which songs to do he mentioned something about The Clash and I remembered this old one Iād demoād about 15 years prior. Actually this song had gone through a couple iterations before the final one here on āLost At Sea'' - first a sloppy garage demo, then a version I recorded on an off-night on tour years ago in New York City with my buddy Johnny T playing drums and our friend Gus manning the deck (that was the version I sent Jaren to listen to), then ultimately the end result here. I love that the musical inspiration on this one was late-stage Clash but we wound up layering it with banjoās and what-not. Definitely takes it somewhere else - ska-mericana?? Thereās nothing better than when influences converge taking you places you never expected.
