We (Vinyl)

E – The sixth Arcade Fire album will be released May 6, 2022. Produced by Nigel Godrich, Win and Régine, the album was recorded in multiple locales ranging from New Orleans to El Paso.

With an album already written, Arcade Fire started recording in February, 2020, but were interrupted by the start of the pandemic. Win & RĆ©gine spent the rest of that year and most of the next writing even more songs.Ā  Its first side, ā€œI,ā€ is about our troubles; its second side, ā€œWE,ā€ is about our love for one another.

So much happened between early 2020 and mid-2021, when all six band members were able to reconvene at the Sonic Ranch studio, in El Paso: lockdowns, an election, global protest and turmoil, and more.Ā  WE's songs reflect the experiences of the past two years, with Side ā€œIā€ channeling the fear and loneliness of isolation and Side ā€œWEā€ expressing the joy and power of reconnection.

These are songs that speak to this moment with unique directness: they have been written, recorded, and released during a critical historical juncture. But they also spring from other sources. The album’s first two tracks, ā€œAge of Anxiety Iā€ and ā€œAge of Anxiety II (Rabbit Hole),ā€ draw on ā€œI Am Waiting,ā€ a poem by Lawrence Ferlinghetti that Butler has been thinking about for decades. Its first half then concludes with the four-part suite, ā€œEnd of the Empire I-IV,ā€ which conjures vivid images of an emotionally depleted America in which we retreat inside ourselves.

WE is a cathartic experience, a study in contrasts, and a journey from darkness into light.
